A Guide to Combining Data Matrices with CAMO Software

In the world of data analysis, it is often necessary to combine data matrices. For instance, new data may have been collected and needs to be added to a calibration set. Alternatively, data sources for the same samples may need to be combined, whether it be process data, spectroscopic data, or analytical tests, amongst others. While it is easy to copy and paste the required data, it can become a hassle to do so when dealing with 2-3 or more matrices. However, there is an easier and quicker way to combine data matrices. The Matrix Calculator function in CAMO Software’s The Unscrambler X can be used to do this in a few simple steps.

Here’s how to combine sample sets using the Matrix Calculator function:

1. Import all the data that you want to combine and label each of the matrices. Ensure that the number of variables and samples is consistent across each matrix. If there are new samples to be appended, the number of variables in each matrix must be the same and in the same order. If there is new data to be added to existing samples, the number of samples in each matrix must be the same and in the same order. Note that The Unscrambler X will soon be releasing a sample alignment tool to make this step easier.

2. Check that the number of variables and samples is consistent across each matrix.

3. Go to Tools and select Matrix Calculator.

4. Check the boxes next to each of the matrices you want to combine. Then, click on the shaping option.

5. Optionally, you can select Add category variable which will add a new column with a category variable labelled with which matrix the data came from. This is especially useful when combining different raw material types or batches.

6. Click on combine to combine the data sample-wise. Note that augment is not currently available because the matrices do not have the same number of samples.

Using this functionality makes combining data matrices an effortless task, allowing you to easily combine sample sets with minimal effort.

In summary, combining data matrices can be a timely task when dealing with numerous samples. However, the Matrix Calculator function within CAMO Software’s The Unscrambler X makes it quick and easy to combine data matrices in just a few straightforward steps. Ensure to label your data matrices appropriately before combining them, check that the number of variables and samples is consistent across each matrix, and use the shaping option in the Matrix Calculator to combine data sample-wise. Following this guide will allow for seamless data integration, ensuring that you gain valuable insights that are imperative in driving decisions and actions.
